The business announced this week that certain iOS users of Gmail can now have direct conversations about their inboxes with Google's Gemini chatbot within the app. Known as Gmail Q&A, the function was initially made available to Android users in August.
Google One AI Premium users and Google Workspace accounts with Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, or Education Premium add-ons can now access it on iOS. With the use of this tool, you can respond to targeted inquiries regarding your emails, like "What was the company's most recent marketing expenditure?" You can ask Gemini to summarize emails on a particular subject in your inbox and display unread messages from a particular sender. As an example, you could write, "Acquaint myself with the communications regarding quarterly planning.”
Google says that to start, Gmail Q&A can find information from your inbox, but in the future, it will also be able to find information from your Drive.
Gmail’s traditional search bar isn’t going away, but now the Gemini button will be added next to the search bar. The idea behind the feature is to get people to use AI when trying to find specific information from their emails, rather than traditionally searching for certain emails.
It’s unlikely that Gmail Q&A will be available to free Gmail users anytime soon, considering that Google is marketing features like Gmail Q&A to convince people to sign up for its monthly subscriptions. These features are likely Google’s best chance at generating revenue through Gemini.
Like almost every other tech company, Google has added AI features to its existing products, including Google Docs, Gmail, Google Calendar, and more.
The new feature comes one day after Gmail unveiled redesigned "summary cards," which let you do more within the email client, like tracking packages, checking in for flights, setting reminders, marking payments as paid, and more.
Google is making sure that its email service stays competitive by releasing these improvements, while Apple added several capabilities similar to Gmail to its Mail app with iOS 18.
